Northern Ireland MN Association.
From time immemorial we have had our seamen, a motley bunch of men, fearless, hardworking, unpretentious loyal only to their ship exploited by governments and shipowners alike, In 1836 a House of Commons Select Committee was set up by the government of the day to look into the affairs of seamen. Forty year later in 1876 Parliament passed the Merchant Shipping Acts after which seafarers were collectively refereed to as the Merchant Service. In recognition of the service given during the First World War by our seamen, King George V in 1922 decreed that the Merchant Service would henceforth be known as the Merchant Navy and that the Prince of Wales would be Master of the Merchant Navy, hence the title MERCHANT NAVY. A title hard earned and well deserved. Unfortunately ignorance often prevails even among senior politicians who should know better they have a propensity to use the Americanism 'Merchant Marine' rather than our own title 'Merchant Navy'.

NEWBOB-LO STEAMERS. The Bob-Lo Steamers Columbia and Ste. Claire are the last two remaining classic excursion steamers in the country; and the last essentially unaltered passenger ships designed by Frank E. Kirby; and for their essentially unaltered propulsion machinery of a type becoming increasingly rare ; as the two last vessels of the Detroit and Windsor Ferry Co.; as two of the few surviving vessels built by the Detroit Dry Dock Company, and for their unaltered propulsion machinery, which is of a rare type. Columbia is the oldest passenger steamer in the United States, excepting vessels properly classed as ferries. Columbia and her running-mate Ste. Claire are the last two steamers of their type with integrity left in the United States. The pair shared their original run from Detroit to Bob-Lo Island for 81 years, a record of service on a single run unequalled in U. S. maritimehistory.

WW1 war at sea.
Trench warfare on the Western Front may have captured the popular imagination, but the First World War was very much a maritime conflict as well. This section of WWI/WWW provides resources on the naval side.

If you should find a link to your site here, and you don't want it on this page please e-mail me and i will remove it.
