The combination of escorts, patrols, seaplanes, hydrophone overhearing stations and hydrophone detachments together with the danger from the mines and the depth charges,they to a considerable extent deprived the underwater pirates of their sting. On 1 October 1918 German naval command obtained order to evacuate Flanders bases.24 destroyers, 20 submarines did return to the German ports,but UB-10, UB-40,UC-4 and 8 torpedo boats were scuttled. UB-59 Was found scuttled in Flanders Base during its evacuation in 1918,the German Flanders Submarine squadron was based at Zeebrugge(in the province of Flanders)some submarines were sent up the Bruges canal to the city of Bruges or Brugge, approximately 6miles from Zeebrugge.
